but for me, it's the nail polish remover that discolourise my nails, not the polishes.

Dry, brittle nails are usually the result of a lack of moisture. The overuse of any nail products which contain formaldehyde can cause your nails to become dry, weak, and brittle. This includes most nail polishes, and nail strengtheners as well.
Other chemicals can also have the same effect on your nails, and on your skin. Water can be very damaging to both your nails and your skin. It has a tremendous drying effect on them. Always use a good hand lotion after washing your hands, after doing dishes, and other tasks which require the use of water. This will help a lot in itself, especially in the cooler winter months.
A few more things which can weaken, and dry out your nails are household cleaners, detergents, and nail polish remover - especially those which contain acetone.
Use hand lotion often. And use a good quality cuticle oil which has jojaba oil as one of the main ingredients, such as Solar oil by CND. This is an excellent cuticle oil, though there are others available too. Both lotions and cuticle oil will help to keep your nails - and cuticles moisturized, and in great shape.
Vitamins which contain botin are supposed to help as well. It can't hurt to try it. A popular belief is that gelatin will help your nails. This is false, and there is very little scientific evidence to support such an assertion. Way back in the 1890's, Knox - a manufacturer of gelatin, marketed their products claiming that gelatin contains protein, and stated that a lack of protein will cause dry and deformed nails. But, our bodies already produce substantial amounts of the same proteins found in gelatin. Besides, it is not a lack of protein which causes dry, brittle nails, it is usually a lack of moisture which is the cause. Thus, gelatin does not help in any way to keep your nails healthy. This is a common belief, but it is not true.
I agree with the fact that nails do not need to 'breathe.' They do not have lungs, or gills. They do not exchange air and carbon dioxide. Nails are made up of dead keratin cells. The only part which is living is at the root of the nail - the matrix. This is where your nail grows out from, and it is located behind the cuticle area. The nail that is visible to you, however, is not living.

no it cant make them thin or brittle thats mainly genetics the part of your nail that you polish is already dead just like your hair the only ';living'; part is still inside which is why it dont hurt to cut either one . if your nails are thin and / or brittle you can strenghten them by either drinking more milk. taking calicum or taking prenatel vitamins (no they arent just for pregnant women they can make your nails and hair grow faster and stronger and help keep your skin clear )
Nails do not breathe. Your brittle nails could be from medications you are taking or even just how your nails are naturally. Wearing a good nail strengthener will help with this. A good line to use is Nailtiques.

No, I dont believe so. The only thing it has ever done for me is stain my nails a differnt color.So if you do have thin nails go to the store and get that nail hardener.
